Sterling Weekly for December 5th, 2005

The Dow Jones Industrial Average began its recent rally on approximately October 28th rallying from the previous day's close of 10,229.95 and reached a closing high of 10,931.62 on November 25th. A gain of just over 700 points (701.68 to be exact) or 6.9% in less than 1 month. Not bad, pretty darn good in fact. Well my technical indicators generated a "sell signal" on the Dow after the close of trading on the 30th, and they are generally not wrong. So I am expecting what should hopefully be not much more than a round of short term profit taking before the market resumes its move higher. From the perspective of market mechanics, there are complicated rules relating to tax loss selling, rebalancing portfolios and re-entering positions that start to come into play around about now. The net effect is that there is usually some seasonal selling that starts to occur in early December, and the buying usually starts in late December to early January.
